The diagram is configured by the intersection of nine triangles - five downwards pointing triangles (female) and four upwards pointing (male) triangles. The high degree of interconnectedness between the nine triangles is the main reason why it is so difficult to draw. Changing the location of one triangle usually requires changing the size and position of many other triangles.
